Gravestone recording day with Dave Howell – confirmed for 2pm on Sunday 23rd August

Gravestone Recording Activity

- Led by Dave Howell, specialist lecturer & archaeologist, University of Wales, Newport

St Illtyds Churchyard, Blaenau Gwent

Sunday 23rd August 2009, 2.00pm

Churchyards are full of information about our past, much of which can be of huge value in the present for understanding who we are and where we come from. Join Dave to begin to learn how to record information about and on, the many headstones in the churchyard. Building on existing information the main aim will be show how you could start to produce a simple plan of architectural features and dates on headstones. The day will also explore ways of plotting headstone positions in the churchyard, and illustrating some of the more architecturally interesting headstone examples.

We peered

we laughed, we cried, we drank tea

We kneeled

We chewed pencils thoughtfully

We hid behind Yew trees

We pondered

We used tape measures

But most of all we had a great time together recording our history.
Big thanks to Rebecca and Dave for being so fab.
